California Live Scan prices — the 2,135-location report
Original research: rolling-fee statistics compiled from every California Live Scan storefront and agency that publishes a price. Updated weekly from the same sources that populate the directory itself.
Half of California's 2,135 priced Live Scan locations charge under $31 for the rolling fee. The middle 50% cluster between $26 and $37. On top of that, every applicant pays the state's $32 DOJ fee and the FBI's $17 (when a federal check is required) — so a typical total sits between $58 and $86.

Cheaper still, if you're a group
Three or more people needing Live Scan — a PTA, a sports league, a church volunteer team, an HR onboarding batch — is usually cheaper on-site than sending everyone to a storefront. A mobile provider comes to you and rolls prints for the whole group in one session.

How much does a California Live Scan cost?
The typical rolling fee at a California Live Scan location is around $31 — half of the 2,135 priced listings we hold charge less than that, half more. On top of the rolling fee, the DOJ charges $32 for the state check and the FBI adds $17 when a federal check is required, so a typical total lands between $58 and $86.
Why do rolling fees vary so much across the state?
The DOJ and FBI portions are set by statute — every location charges them equally. The rolling fee is the only part the location itself controls, and it reflects each provider's overhead, volume, and whether they subsidise the service. In our dataset the middle 50% of locations charge between $26 and $37 for the roll, but the full range runs from $10 to $116.
Do most California Live Scan locations require an appointment?
No — 64.8% of the locations we track accept walk-ins, based on what each provider publishes about its own service model. Government and law-enforcement offices are more likely to require appointments; retail storefronts like UPS Store and PostalAnnex+ franchisees typically accept walk-ins during business hours.
Are these fees current?
The dataset behind this report refreshes weekly from public sources. Fees can change between refreshes, so treat every number here as the last-published price at each location and confirm before you visit.
How was this report compiled?
We aggregated every California Live Scan listing that publishes a rolling fee — 2,140 in total. Fees below $10 or above $150 were flagged as outliers (usually special-case pricing or data entry errors) and excluded from medians (5 rows, 0.00%). County medians are only published where the county has at least 5 priced listings; city medians require at least 3. Full methodology at the bottom of this page.
Methodology
- Source. Every California listing in LiveScanMap's directory that publishes a rolling fee: 2,140 locations, drawn from the California DOJ's public list and two national vendor networks (Certifix, Capital) whose California sites we index.
- Outlier filter. Fees below $10 or above $150 are excluded from medians — these are usually special-case (subsidised for a specific population) or bundled (Live Scan plus notary, plus mailing) rather than raw rolling fees. 5 rows were flagged (0.23% of the total).
- Publication thresholds. A county's median is published only if the county has at least 5 clean priced listings; a city's median needs at least 3. Below those, a single listing moves the number too much to publish as a fact.
- DOJ / FBI portions. $32 state fee and $17 federal fee are set by statute and paid at every location, so this report focuses on the rolling fee — the only component that varies.
- Refresh cadence. The dataset behind this page refreshes weekly. Report generated 2026-09-21.
